35 movies to watch from 1990 to 2024 (1 Movie per year) part 1/5 | Movie Marathon Idea

Hey there, looking for movies to binge watch with friends? Family? Maybe setting up a throwback and nostalgia theme for a sleepover or reunion? Here's a mix of movies you can check out. Movies dated all the way from 1990 up to 2024.

There's no particular genre or anything, these movies are randomly chosen from each year.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟘 - Edward Scissorhands (1990)

I remembered hearing stories about this movie when I was a child, but Edward's appearance was so scary, I could not bring myself to actually watch it. But this was one of those classics that I always heard about. It was about Edward, a humanoid sort of being who had scissors for hands. An Avon lady (whose name I forgot) tried to sell Avon products to Edward and somehow managed to bring him into her home like adopting a puppy from the streets.

We meet her husband, her son and her daughter, Kim, a.k.a. the potential love interest for Edward.

The movie reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. Where we have Edward as Beast and Kim as Belle. Edward was kind and thoughtful (somehow) and talented (with his impressive ability to cut and trim things from hedges to ice sculptures). Kim had a boyfriend (who paralleled Gaston and he) was jealous of Edward (for some reason. Dude, the only way Edward was gonna win a woman like Kim is if you shove her away with you being a jerk). Without spoiling further details, I think this would be a nice watch for nostalgia.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟙 - An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991)

When I was a child, we didn't have cable, but my dad loved buying DVDs. And we had stacks of cartoons that I repeatedly watch during my childhood. One of them was this musical adventure of a mouse named Fievel. And no, I wasn't born when this was released lol. Just wanted to clear that up.

Now I don't really remember name specifics, just certain keywords that might spoil you, so instead of mentioning those, I will bring up the songs that I loved singing along while watching.

Song Number 1: Somewhere Out There, then we have Song Number 2: Never Say Never and lastly, Song Number 3: There Are No Cats In America.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟚 - Beethoven (1992)

Most family movies I've watched during my childhood were centered on pet themes, just like Beethoven. And honestly, pet movies built this expectation that my dogs would be as protective and caring as Beethoven.

The movie centers on a family that takes in a St. Bernard puppy, the titular character of the movie (which by the way has five parts, being passed on to different families in some sequels). We have the dad, the mom and three kids who raised this pup very well. It's a wholesome movie, probably a nice way to end tonight's movie marathon.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟛 - Demolition Man (1993)

I have a long list of wholesome movies, but if you're in it to watch all night, you can try this movie. A Sylvester Stallone VS Wesley Snipes film! with, of course, leading lady, Sandra Bullock.

For a 90s film, I honestly am really surprised with how they portrayed the future. It was 1996 when Spartan (Stallone) tried to apprehend a criminal who kidnaps civilian hostages, Simon Phoenix (Snipes), but Spartan's attempt to capture him resulted in the death of these civilians. Therefore both are punished by cryo-sleep (or whatever fancy way it was called).

Fast forward to 2032 where the world lives in some sort of peaceful city, where violence doesn't exist. Simon Phoenix gets a hearing but naturally escapes with everyone inexperienced with aggression. Of course, the only way to deal with him is to bring back his rival, Spartan. I think you guys know where it's going from there.

On a side note, Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) is the love interest that Spartan meets after he wakes up. In case you guys want to know what Bullock's role is.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟜 - The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

This was one of those films that I watched because everyone had already watched it and was talking about it so I had to up this from my watchlist, just so I was up-to-date with the "talk of the town".

Prison films fascinated me for some reason, but a prison drama? That would depend on how the plot went. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman really delivered here and I managed not to get bored throughout the two hour-film. If this has been in your watchlist forever, I think it's time to finally see what it's about. Probably won't be as entertaining to watch with kids though.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟝 - Jumanji (1995)

Most of you probably know more about the 2017 version of this, but let me tell you there's actually an older version. Starring Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce.

Loner Alan Parrish (Williams) discovers a board game and invites his friend, Sarah Whittle (Hunt) to play with him. However, after the board game somehow "eats" Alan and he de-materializes into the board, Sarah runs off being chased by bats.

Twenty six years later, we have potential house owners with two kids. They discover the dusty old board game. Judy (Dunst) rolled first, then Peter (Pierce), finally releasing Alan Parrish from the board game (I honestly forgot what the condition was lol). When they realize they needed to play and finish the game, they had to gather all the players and beat the game. (Because they can't skip turns, they can't play the turn of someone else either, or cheat tsk tsk).

The drumming part of the game resonates with my heartbeat and somehow creeps me out. Some people aren't as entertained by this, but I kind of really enjoyed it. I don't get to see a lot of board game films lately and having to re-watch the classics is definitely nice.

𝟙𝟡𝟡𝟞 - All Dogs go to heaven (1996)

I wanted to end the first day with another cartoon film. I promise in the next list we have better choices. But I can't not mention this doggie film classic.

Who would have thought that so many films are about pets and dogs and cats back in the old days? Like Oliver and Company, Balto, Babe, Stuart Little and many more. But today, we're going to talk about All Dogs Go To Heaven. The concept is really weird, but it didn't matter to child version of me back then. And for them to make it into a musical fantasy makes it entertaining because would want to sing-along.
